The International Circulation of ‘Nuovomondo’

Nuovomondo, written and directed by Emanuele Crialese, was produced by Rai Cinema, Respiro, Memento Films Productions and Titti Film. It is a co-production with Arte France Cinéma (France). The movie was premiered at the Venice Film Festival, on September 8th, 2006 and then released in theatres from September 22nd, 2006 by 01Distribution. It was sold internationally by Wild Bunch with the title The Golden Door.

In Italy, the distribution of Nuovomondo reached 282 screens and lasted 8 weeks. In the first weekend of theatrical release the film grossed $1.225.425; it ultimately reached a total amount of $5.859.312, with a total of 866.994 admissions.

The movie had a very positive critical reception and won a large number of prizes. In 2006, during the Venice Film Festival, director Emanuele Crialese won the Silver Lion and four other important prizes. In 2007, at the David di Donatello awards, Nuovomondo won in three categories: best scenography, best costumes and best visual effects. Following its release, the movie collected a wide number of nominations in national and international competitions.

In Switzerland the film was distributed by Frenetic Films, on different dates according to linguistic regions. It was released on September 29th 2006 in the Italian-speaking region (straight after the national release in Italy), on March 21st, 2007 in the French-speaking region (alongside the release in France), and on May 20th, 2007 in the German-speaking region.

France

Although its official release in French theatres was on March 21st, 2007, the movie had several premières: at the Annecy Italian Film Festival (September 22nd, 2006), the Cinessone Film Festival (October 8th, 2006) and the Angers European First Film Festival (January 27th, 2007). Its French distributor was is Memento Films.

In UK, the film was distributed by Optimum Releasing on June 29th, 2007 in British and Irish theatres, then it took part at the Raindance Film Festival (September 25th, 2006).

USA

In the US, The Golden Door had a wide distribution through festivals before its theatrical release. It was first premiered during Cinema Italian Style at the Tribeca Film Festival, in 2007. There it was presented by Martin Scorsese, who was also involved in the marketing plan of the movie for the American distribution, feeling himself engaged due to his personal family history. The theatrical release was then on May 25th, 2007 and the DVD release on January 8th, 2008. The Golden Door was distributed by Miramax studios.
